Castaways

Do you remember that summer?

How the obsessed grains of sand

Never truly left our skin

No matter how many times

We showered and

Tried to separate the ocean

From our bodies?

Do you remember

The way the water leapt up

Around us

In joyous welcome

As we twirled in its waves,

Taking us back

After so many

Years?

We are the children

Of the sea,

They say.

And yes,

I believe them,

Because

The memories came back to me

This morning

And they tasted

Like cinnamon-dusted kisses

And sunburnt laughter

And saltwater taffy

Smiles.
