Half-Gods

If you are a deity, love,

you are half of one –

for I will not deny there

is timelessness in your flesh,

yes, but there is flesh to you

as there is flesh to me

and all other half-gods

straining against mortality

towards a future where

everyone has a throne

and a group of followers

and a war to prove each one right.

Meanwhile the true kings

have lain quiet in the mountains,

have kissed each star

in the Northern sky

and whispered a story

to every winged creature

and their only divine wickedness

is to have told far too many secrets

to the swallow and the sparrow

and the rolling hills,

to have revealed too much of

themselves to us that now

we live only to imitate

their whisperings.
