The Last Word

Something charming about the way

death saves itself for the last minute,

like the call we’ve waited our entire

lives to hear, coming softly through

cracks in the trees we never expected

could have anything profound to say.

The words I’ve shouted here might echo

for a moment like some great secret

thundering down a rolling hill, but

the last word will be a whisper,

and it will be his.
