Open Letter

Words like spittle from your lips.

Wipe your chin, love,

here’s a napkin –

come inside and

stop yelling at the sky.

          1. Good questions. I know I have directed my voice by putting my hands on either side of my mouth, but mostly I feel my direction is according to what I am facing.

I have also been directed to lower my voice — this happened in my friendly familiar psych ward when a social worker behind the front desk gestured to me. She held her right arm up and lowered her elbow when I was about to supposedly yell out to a black psychiatrist, “I am The Black Jesus.” The social worker may have been doing me (and the psychiatrist?) a favour, I think, by allowing me to be listened to as well as heard.

Thoughts? I love those.
